NW Groundwork was commissioned to demolish the old farmhouse at Morris Bank Farm to pave the way for a new bungalow. This project not only transformed the local landscape, but also showcased a thoughtful approach to construction and sustainability.
The farmhouse, a longstanding part of the farm's rich history, was carefully taken down by a skilled crew that adhered to rigorous safety standards. Utilising machinery equipped with selector grabs, the team meticulously dismantled the structure, while efficiently recovering materials for reuse. Using selector grabs for demolition meant no ground crews were required to work in a potentially hazardous environment.
In addition to the careful demolition the project implemented various operational safety measures. A welfare van on-site ensured that crew members had access to necessary facilities, promoting their well-being throughout the project. Spill kits were strategically placed around the site to address potential environmental hazards, demonstrating a commitment to responsible resource management and safety protocols. All machinery used was maintained to high standards, featuring the latest technology, including AdBlue systems to reduce emissions. The use of the new Hamm cab roller enhanced safety and efficiency, allowing operators to work effectively in the field.
One of the standout features of this project was the successful salvage of the farmhouse stone. As part of the site preparation, the reclaimed stone was crushed and repurposed into durable surfaces for a new driveway and essential farm tracks, plus a hard standing area for farm machinery, supporting ongoing farming operations.
By integrating the stone from the old building into the new layout, NW Groundwork have created a cohesive environment that honours the farm's heritage. Recycling the farmhouse stone not only minimized waste but also preserved a piece of the farm's charm.
The new driveway serves as a beautiful and practical pathway to the bungalow, evoking nostalgia while providing a strong surface for daily use. The hard standing area, designed for farm vehicles, benefits from the reclaimed stone's strength, ensuring longevity with minimal upkeep, while the farm tracks facilitate the efficient movement of equipment and livestock, enhancing daily operations.
This project exemplifies a genuine commitment to sustainable development, highlighting the importance of integrating historical elements with modern construction practices. By reusing the farmhouse stone, NW Groundwork paid homage to the legacy of the old farmhouse while laying the groundwork for a fresh chapter in the farm's story. This thoughtful blending of old and new reflects a profound respect for the environment and a dedication to eco-friendly practices.
Furthermore, the reclaimed stone was creatively utilized for garden walls, adding aesthetic value to the property. Impressively, the demolition resulted in only one half skip of rubbish, with an astonishing 99% of materials being reused, showcasing the team's dedication to minimising waste and maximising resource efficiency.
Farm owners Angela and Brian Crane were delighted with the success of the project: "Absolutely outstanding team: punctual, reliable, tidy, efficient, disciplined hard working team, patient with our ill-timed add-ons too, nothing was too much. I cannot thank you enough, outstanding job Mark and your team at NW Groundworks."
The Morris Bank Farm project stands as a model for future developments, illustrating how thoughtful planning and execution can lead to sustainable outcomes that honour the past while looking forward to the future.
