NW Groundwork recently completed a site redevelopment project in Bury, working on behalf of principal contractor George Cox & Sons for Bury Council. The aim was to create new dedicated bays for storing grit and stone, along with a designated area where road sweepers can safely tip off.

The site, which had seen years of mixed use, needed a complete rethink. What was once a patchwork of uneven surfaces and informal storage has now been transformed into a clearly defined, well-drained, and highly functional space.
Before work could begin, the team carried out essential underground service tracing to ensure the ground was safe to dig. Once the layout was confirmed, the existing surface was broken out using a hydraulic breaker fitted to a 13-tonne Hitachi excavator. All arising concrete and rubble was processed on site to reduce waste and minimise vehicle movements.

The new layout features robust concrete bay walls, designed to contain and separate different materials while making loading safer and more efficient. By creating clearly defined zones, the site can now be managed more effectively, reducing the risk of contamination or spillages and improving operational flow for council vehicles and maintenance teams.

Despite wet ground conditions and some tight working areas, the job was completed with precision and efficiency – thanks to thoughtful planning, the right equipment, and a skilled team on the ground.
This project is another strong example of NW Groundwork’s ability to deliver practical, well-executed solutions for local authorities and contractors alike – combining health and safety best practice with a focus on value and usability.
