Tackling Damp in a Confined Space

NW Groundwork recently completed a well-managed project for Nest Building Services, delivering a carefully considered solution to a damp issue in an existing property. The job called for more than just technical know-how – it required a practical and environmentally responsible approach that prioritised both performance and safety.

To tackle the damp, our team reduced the internal ground level of the property. This allowed us to lay a new sub-base of clean stone, followed by modern insulation and a fresh concrete slab. This method not only addressed the immediate moisture problems but also improved the thermal efficiency of the space, providing a long-term benefit for the homeowners.
Working within such a tight space brought its own set of challenges. With limited room and narrow access, every stage of the job had to be carefully planned and executed with precision. The use of compact machinery and conveyor systems allowed us to operate efficiently without compromising the existing structure. It was a clear demonstration of how thoughtful groundwork can still be carried out to a high standard, even in the most restrictive environments – and a great example of the adaptability that underpins our approach.
In keeping with the eco-conscious values shared by Nest Building Services, the project also made use of conveyor systems to minimise disruption and reduce the carbon impact of moving materials. It’s a small change that made a big difference – cutting down on manual handling and streamlining the workflow without the need for excess machinery on site.
Worker safety was another key priority. With excavation taking place indoors, we introduced an extraction system to safely manage exhaust fumes. This helped maintain good air quality within the building and ensured the machine operator could work comfortably and safely throughout the process.

From start to finish, this was a smooth and well-organised project that brought together practical problem-solving, environmental awareness, and a strong commitment to safety. We’re pleased to have supported Nest Building Services in delivering another quality result – and proud to bring our thoughtful approach to groundworks wherever it’s needed.
