Tree Clearance Works that put Safety First

In Rochdale, NW Groundwork recently completed a tree clearance project that demonstrated how smart thinking and the right equipment can transform both safety and efficiency on site. The works formed part of early preparation for a new car park, with a focus on delivering a clean, clear space while keeping risks to an absolute minimum.

Rather than relying on manual chainsaw work or teams operating beneath the canopy, the team used a 13 tonne Hitachi excavator fitted with a tree shear attachment to fell the trees. Working entirely from within the cab, the operator was able to grip, cut and lower each tree in a controlled way – eliminating the need for ground operatives and removing the usual hazards posed by falling limbs, uneven footing and unpredictable movement.
Once the trees were down, a second excavator – a 6 tonne model fitted with a hydraulic selector grab – was brought in to sort and feed the material directly into the shredder. Working alongside a powerful Fendt tractor, the setup allowed a steady flow of timber to be processed on site, reducing handling and keeping the work moving efficiently. Another excavator supported the operation from the opposite side, keeping the shredder well supplied and clearing the remaining timber and debris.

With all timber processed and cleared, the site was left clean, safe and ready for the next stage of construction. The use of the right machinery kept the operation efficient and reduced risk throughout.
This approach reflects how NW Groundwork tackles every job – with practical solutions, careful planning and a clear focus on doing things properly.
